Bedford Town stood firm to defend a 1-0 lead given to them by a 3rd-minute goal from George Moncur at Telford.
It was a resolute display with some tremendous defending as a unit to secure the Eagles’ first away points of the season.
The game could not have got off to a better start than through Moncur’s early opener. For a man that has already scored a sublime winner this season, this was another pretty decent one to add to the catalogue.
Josh Castiglione knocked the ball over the defender to set the attacking midfielder free down the right wing. He then found a burst of acceleration to glide past Zak Lilly and managed to drive in unchallenged all the way from the byline to the middle of the box.
Once he got there he showed the composure to delicately lift the ball over Lewys Benjamin in the AFC Telford goal and into the net to give Bedford a dream start.
Not everything Moncur touches turns to the gold though, as was demonstrated when he was booked for diving in the box six minutes later.
The next twenty minutes or so saw the hosts grow into the game without creating too much of value, and it was actually the Eagles who went closest with Eno Nto just nodding over the bar from a Moncur cross.
However, the closing stages of the first half were a different story as Bedford’s goal came under increasing pressure and they were grateful to Laurie Walker in goal for keeping the lead going into half time.
In the 41st minute, substitute Louis Moult crashed a sharp volley towards Walker, but he showed outstanding reflexes to tip it just over the bar with his left hand. From the resulting corner, Moult was there again unmarked at the backpost, but Bedford’s keeper got down to his right to save that too.
After half-time the pressure continued to mount as Telford went close on three occasions and had a very dangerous looking penalty shout.
In the 49th minute, the ball broke loose to Telford striker Matthew Stenson on the edge of the box, and he would have been disappointed as he got too much power on his whipped effort and it went over the bar.
Five minutes later Oliver Cawthorne-Bandres got his head to a Telford corner unchallenged, but didn’t direct it downwards, instead nodding it straight over the bar from close in.
Just after the hour mark, Walker made his finest save of the day and it could be one of the best this season. A powerful shot from 25 yards out by Remi Walker was searing into the top-left corner, until Walker’s full-stretch dive managed to get fingertips on the ball and divert it onto the post.
Anthony Stewart was brought on just after the hour mark as the Eagles went to a 5-2-3 shape to deal with the pressure, but the centre-back nearly conceded an immediate penalty as he took a while to get into the game.
He appeared to bundle Moult over after being turned, but the referee waved away the home side’s appeals and Bedford breathed a sigh of relief.
After this, the Eagles’ determination to see out the result was fully on display as they got to every ball to clear first and showed incredible fighting spirit.
Ryan Doherty, Greg Taylor, and Stewart were defending everything in sight while Junior Gyamfi and David Hicks manned the area just in front of them superbly.
The rest of the game passed by without too many heart-in-mouth moments and Bedford clinched a first away win of the season that could be looked back upon as one of the season’s defining moments.
Back-to-back wins on the Bank Holiday weekend and three wins in four mean Bedford are sitting in 10th and smiling, while Telford remain winless and rooted to the bottom.
