The Eagles couldn’t emulate the win over Hednesford, after losing 3-0 at home to Macclesfield on Saturday.
Both clubs have been brought together since the tragic death Ethan McLeod in December last year, as he drove back to Cheshire, but on the pitch there was no benevolence from the Silkmen, who were smarting from the defeat against Hereford in their last game.
Harry Smart was forced into a change to the line up, with new loan signing, Balu Mukumbi taking the place of Alfie Thornett, who was recalled by Stevenage for their game against Leicester City.
The Bedford boss also included Junior Gyamfi in the squad, three weeks after getting stretchered off in Chester.
Before kick off, there was a minute’s applause for McLeod.
From the off, Macclesfield took the game by the scruff of the neck, and took the lead on four minutes, when Luke Duffy planted a well executed shot into the top right corner of the net from the left corner of the area.
Coming back three minutes later, George Moncur found Reece Evans, in the away area, but his shot was blocked, with Josh Castiglione sticking the rebound over the bar.
Always a threat on the wing, Jon Ustabasi then came in off the right to shoot, but it was wide.
Visions of a Joe Payne goal from a free kick when Bedford were awarded one just outside the Macclesfield area. This time he planted the ball just over the bar.
Danny Anisjko then took advantage of some dilly-dallying between Paul Dawson and Fin Shrimpton to get between them to nick the ball, which he took to the left byline, and with Evans also in the area, took one touch too many and a defender came across to dispossess him at the expense of a corner.
Midway through the half, Laurie Walker had to stretch high to tip a looping ball over the bar, when a corner came floating in, allowing a visiting boot to direct the ball goal wards. From the second kick, a header was placed straight into Walker’s arms.
Danny Elliott then stuck a header just over the bar, when connecting with Adan George’s cross.
Bedford claimed a penalty on their next attack, when a free kick on the right corner flag was played to David Hicks, and his shot was deflected off for a corner by Dawson, with the players and fans behind the goal shouting handball, but the referee was having none of it, and the Eagles had to make do with a corner.
Macclesfield doubled their lead on 36 minutes, as Elliott met another cross with his head, and this time the ball was powered into the net from the free header.
Just before the break, a wicked cross from Castiglione saw Christian Dibble fluff the ball when trying to cut it out, but the ball didn’t run kindly for Anisjko, and the defence cleared. Evans brought it back, only to fire it wide of the mark.
Two minutes into the 2nd half, the visitors made it three, as a long ball to Elliott saw him power through the defence and fire past Walker. This was not the start to the half Bedford wanted.
It was not the start to the half that Matty Apter wanted, either, as he looked to have turned his ankle running back out onto the pitch for the start of the half, and had to be replaced by Ed Ikpakwu.
Seven minutes into the half, Gyamfi was put into the mix, as Mukumbi was brought off.
On 64 minutes, Walker denied Elliott a hat trick after the No10 had capitalised on an uncharacteristically poor touch from T’Sharne Gallimore and homed in on goal, with the Bedford ‘keeper saving the eventual effort at his right hand post.
Payne then tested Dibble with a long range pop, and the Macclesfield guardian had to put the ball away for a corner.
With 15 minutes remaining, Bedford had the ball in the net courtesy of Manny Duku, but the referee had blown for a foul a split second before.
The last portion of the match was played out uneventfully, with a Duku free kick, right at the end, going into the arms of Dibble.
